Opal

WesternAustralia

Australia has been the worlds number one source of quality opals for over 100 years. It is estimated that 95-97% of all Opals come from the Australian opal fields. Today there are huge deposits of opal mined in Ethiopia and even old Hungarian opal mines have re-opened in Slovakia. However Australian opals are highly regarded as the best opals in the world.

Opals are unique because they display a rainbow-like display due to their intrinsic microstructure which diffracts white light into all the colors of the spectrum. Opals are multi-colored and consist of small spheres of silica arranged in a regular pattern, with water between the spheres. The spheres diffract white light, breaking it up into the colors of the spectrum. This process is called 'opalescence'. Larger spheres provide all colors, smaller ones only blues and greens. Opals that have a predominantly red color are very rare as they only occur where where larger silica spheres were deposited.White opals have delicate, pale colors on a lighter background. Black opals (very rare and valuable) have a dark background and colors ranging from brilliant red through to greens, blues and purples. Boulder opals are cut with the natural host rock, ironstone, on the back.

Using high magnification lens we capture images deep within the microscopic typography of the stone and can transport the viewer into a micro world, far beyond what the naked eye perceives. Then we transfer those images onto luxurious fabric for "Stone Scarves”! Chiffon, lightweight and translucent, is the material of choice for our scarves as it allows for the printed design to be visible on both sides. The ultra-sheer fabric is printed using ecologically-safe transfer sublimation inks that provide vibrant color and strong wash durability. The printing process consumes no water and uses non-toxic bio-degradable inks. (We recommend washing machine with phosphate free detergent on a warm or cool delicate setting. Tumble dry low or line-dry)
Select size either (approximately) 36"x52" or 26"x72 and we will ship your beautiful scarf to you!
All of our macro photographs are of our own stone; cut and polished, exposing the natural beauty inside.
