Petoskey Stone Scarf
Petoskey, Michigan
Around 350 to 400 million years ago the land we know as Michigan was located near the equator. Covered by a warm, shallow, saltwater sea, the colonial coral Hexagonaria Percarinata thrived with other marine life in tropical reefs. The earth’s plates moved and pushed Michigan north to the 45th parallel and above sea level, which created dry land formations.
More recently, about two million years ago, glacial action scraped the earth and spread the fossils across the northern Lower Peninsula, depositing major concentrations in the Petoskey area. The prehistoric fossil, unique to the Traverse Group rock strata, is called the Petoskey Stone and is Michigan’s official state stone. A Petoskey Stone consists of tightly packed, six-sided corallites, which are the skeletons of the once-living coral polyps. The dark center (or eyes) were the mouth of the coral. The lines surrounding the eyes were once tentacles which brought food into the mouth.
The Petoskey Stone, like the city, was named for the Ottawa Chief Pe-to-se-ga (Rising Sun) because the stones pattern looks like the rays of the sun. When dry, the stone resembles ordinary limestone but when wet or polished using lapidary techniques, the distinctive mottled pattern of the six-sided coral fossils emerges. Petoskey, sitting on the shores of Lake Michigan, has been a popular vacation spot for decades. Earnest Hemingway spent the first 18 summers of his life sailing and fishing on nearby Walloon Lake, and the area features prominently in several of his stories. The area is also a well known winter destination, with three popular ski resorts featuring everything from dog sled rides to tubing.
Using high magnification lens we capture images deep within the microscopic typography of the stone and can transport the viewer into a micro world, far beyond what the naked eye perceives. Then we transfer those images onto luxurious fabric for "Stone Scarves”! Chiffon, lightweight and translucent, is the material of choice for our scarves as it allows for the printed design to be visible on both sides. The ultra-sheer fabric is printed using ecologically-safe transfer sublimation inks that provide vibrant color and strong wash durability. The printing process consumes no water and uses non-toxic bio-degradable inks. (We recommend washing machine with phosphate free detergent on a warm or cool delicate setting. Tumble dry low or line-dry)
Select size either (approximately) 36"x52" or 26"x72 and we will ship your beautiful scarf to you!
