Picasso Marble is found in Utah, U.S. It is a relatively soft stone between 4-5 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Identifiable by its striking and dramatic combination of browns, blacks, grays, blues and white colors, each piece is different.
Picasso Marble is a metamorphic equivalent of limestone, and this material appears to have been altered to marble by its contact with igneous material, which “cooked” the limestone and flooded the stone with solutions that traveled through a network of fractures, coloring the stone with iron oxide. The Picasso marble is fine-grained, takes a satin-finish polished, and is found in southwestern Utah. Picasso marble is named after a geometric grid of black and tan lines that criss-cross the matrix of the stone, resembling an abstract painting.
We traveled to Utah in the Spring of 2015 with the hopes that cold weather was behind us... nope. Snow and temperatures in the teens did not deter us. After working for a while with frozen fingers, we were a couple of happy rock hounds with Picasso Marble loaded in our truck and on our to warmer climates (Arizona).
"During the early Permian, 270 million years ago, western Utah was under water. The Coconino sandstone was being laid down on land, Then the Toroweap limestone ( a mixture of blobs of limestone, dolomite, mud, clay, and sand ) accumulated in the water, and was topped off by the Kaibab limestone.
Image "Grand Canyon" - The layers noted in this photo are now near the top of the Grand Canyon.
Between 140 million years (Ma) ago and 50 Ma the Sevier orogeny occurred as the oceanic Farallon Plate was subducted underneath the continental North American Plate. It was a folding/thrusting and heat generating mountain-building event that affected western North America from Canada to Mexico.
Vulcanism forced black silver sulfide and other ore bearing fluids into the rocks for the Star and Frisco mining areas west of Milford Utah and into the Mineral mountains east of Milford that began as a molten granite pluton 22 million years ago, generating more metamorphic heat. Vulcanism continued throughout the area.
In all this heat and pressure, some of the fractured and mineral filled Toroweap limestone was changed into marble.
And THERE is where we find Picasso Marble, a material prized by carvers and lapidarists all over the world."

This is what we do...
With environmental consciousness in mind, our fabrics are all printed using completely water-based inks. This means no chemicals or solvents are used. We transfer those images onto luxurious fabric using ecologically safe transfer sublimation inks that provide vibrant color. The printing process uses no water and uses non-toxic bio-degradable inks. Our heat fixing procedure fixes the colors and prints, avoiding the downsides of steaming, such as excess or contaminated water returning into the waste system. The textile industry is rife with sustainability problems: from the use of toxic inks and wasteful practices for materials and water, to a race to utilize the cheapest materials such as vinyl—no matter the environmental impact. Our print-on-demand process is designed to minimize fabric and ink waste. Reducing the use of materials, energy and water by choosing a pigment printing process instead of reactive dye.
Making use of stone that we personally collect, cut and polish to a mirror finish, coupled with high powered lenses, we transport the viewer into a microscopic world, far beyond what the naked eye perceives. The diversity, originality and beauty of what is revealed defy description. Those images are then transferred onto a variety of mediums. Consider textiles that are transformed into decor including decorative pillows, bedding, table linens, for both home and commercial use. And fabrics for the fashion world. GEO originals has opened the door to a realm of beauty crossing all genres with endless applications.
