We collect the magnesite that we use in our stone art in Arizona.
Magnesite is a mineral with the chemical formula MgCO3 (magnesium carbonate). Iron, manganese, cobalt and nickel. Magnesite occurs as veins in and an alteration product of ultramorphic rocks, serpentine and other magnesium rich rock types. The magnesite that you see is the black or sometimes brown mineral.
Magnesite is used in many different applications. For instance, it can be used as a binder in flooring material. It is being used as a catalyst and filler in the production of synthetic rubber and in the preparation of magnesium chemicals and fertilizers. It can be cut, drilled, and polished to form beads that are used in jewelry-making. The beads can be dyed into a broad spectrum of bold colors, including a light blue color that mimics the appearance of turquoise.
Over 500 minerals have been discovered that exhibit some sort of fluorescence when exposed to ultra violet light. The magnesite that we collect will fluoresce a lime green as you see in the photos.
This image is for illustrative purposes only.
The colors shown are accurate within the constraints of lighting, photography and the color accuracy of your screen.
All of our images are of our own stone; cut and polished, exposing the natural beauty inside.
